A pesquisa foi aceita para publicação na revista The Lancet Microbe.

 Pesquisa é a sétima publicação do professor Alessandro Pasqualotto na The Lancet.

Um artigo desenvolvido no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Patologia da UFCSPA e conduzido pela European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) e International Society of Human and Medical Mycology (ISHAM) foi aceito para publicação na revista The Lancet Microbe. Estão envolvidos na pesquisa a mestranda Candida Driemeyer e o professor da UFCSPA e chefe do serviço de infectologia da Santa Casa, Alessandro Pasqualotto. Esse é o sétimo trabalho do docente publicado na The Lancet. “Este é o primeiro grande retrato da infra-estrutura micológica na África. Os achados deste estudo poderão ter importantes impactos para saúde pública no continente”, afirma Pasqualotto.

O estudo reuniu esforços de diversos autores da Europa, Estados Unidos e África. Foi avaliada a capacidade de diagnóstico e de tratamento na área de Micologia - doenças causadas por fungos - nas instituições africanas. O objetivo foi o mapeamento do continente africano quanto a capacidade de diagnóstico e tratamento das principais doenças fúngicas invasivas sérias, que causam considerável morbidade e até mortalidade. Tenta-se por meio desse mapeamento propor mudanças, ou facilitar intervenções de saúde pública nesse continente.

A metodologia consistiu na elaboração de um questionário validado pela ECMM e ISHAM, sendo albergado pela Universidade de Cologne na Alemanha e distribuído aos principais sócios dessas sociedades que fossem do continente africano e para pessoas conhecidas. Buscou-se atingir o maior número de pessoas, de preferência em todo o continente africano. Foi também realizada uma busca por autores e publicações em infecção fúngica de cada país da África. O questionário obteve 40 respondedores, a maioria de hospitais terciários.

Pouco se sabia sobre o continente africano em relação à capacidade de diagnosticar e tratar infecção fúngica. A micologia, como especialidade, estuda não só os fungos, mas também as infecções causadas por eles. Existem muitas drogas novas e testes desenvolvidos, mas muitos lugares no mundo tem acesso corrente e disponibilidade quanto ao diagnóstico, capacidades operacionais e treinamento profissional.

A pesquisa contribui para a implementação de medidas, visando capacitar os centros de tratamento, para serem direcionados investimentos específicos, permitindo que as pessoas tenham acesso às tecnologias.
